Keep the Trump Administration’s Hands Off Our Data!

The government knows too much about us.

Right now, the U.S. government has the ability to obtain a ton of our most sensitive, personal information about every aspect of our lives – from where we live and worship to when we got our last period – by simply opening the federal wallet. If Donald Trump’s administration gains unfettered access to our personal data, they could use it to go after communities of color, political opponents, people seeking reproductive or gender-affirming health care, and anyone who disagrees with their policies.

When the government wants to obtain our private information, like our location data, the Fourth Amendment requires it to go to court and obtain a warrant. Instead, it has been buying its way around this requirement by purchasing our most sensitive data from data brokers – putting anyone who uses the Internet or carries a smartphone at risk of being tracked.

But we’re not powerless. We’re still pushing Congress to pass the overwhelmingly popular Fourth Amendment Is Not For Sale Act to end this practice – and in the meantime, the Biden administration can put an immediate stop to this abuse of power by issuing a moratorium on the federal government’s ability to buy our data without a warrant.

Send a public comment to the Biden administration now and demand an end to federal purchases of personal information before Trump takes office again this January.

Note: Taking this action will leave a public comment for the Office of Management and Budget at federalregister.gov.

For too long, the government has tracked and stored excessive information on the American people by simply buying it from data brokers online – including deeply sensitive personal info like health information and location data, which could be used by law enforcement to track visits to abortion clinics and more. And despite the Fourth Amendment protecting us against unreasonable searches and seizures, these purchases are often done out of the public eye and entirely without warrants – such as offices in the Department of Homeland Security that have bought and used cell phone location data from third parties. I’m urging President Biden and the Office of Management and Budget to protect our privacy by freezing federal purchases of personal information. Not only is this a massive invasion of privacy, but in the wrong hands, it could be downright dangerous – leaving us vulnerable to identity-based attacks and disenfranchisement.

We, the people, have a right to know who’s seeing our data, what our data is used for, and how long the data is being stored for. With very few safeguards protecting our individual privacy – and current practices that are rife for abuse – I’m calling on the Biden administration to end warrantless purchases of our personal information.
