Become a legal observer with the ACLU of South Dakota

Legal Observer Training

The right to join with fellow citizens in protest or peaceful assembly is critical to a functioning democracy and at the core of the First Amendment. Unfortunately, law enforcement officials sometimes violate this right through means intended to thwart free public expression.

With more and more people making their voices heard by marching in the streets, it's essential to have trained legal observers to ensure that no one's First Amendment rights are violated.

Legal observers are committed to defending free speech in a way that is as objective as possible so that their documentation can be used as evidence if police misconduct or obstructions to constitutionally protected free speech are challenged in court.

By completing this training and joining the volunteer legal observer team in your part of the state, you can do your part to uphold the First Amendment. Will you join us?
