Has "Serve and Protect" Become "Silence and Evict"? How Nuisance Ordinances Threaten Our Rights and Communities - Across the country, communities have enacted local nuisance laws that penalize landlords and tenants based on calls for police service and criminal activity occurring at the property, even if the residents are victims of the crime. These laws frequently result in the eviction of families, and in many cities, are disproportionately enforced against domestic violence victims, people of color, and people with disabilities. We will examine how these laws profoundly undermine communities, and we will discuss our campaign to challenge these laws in the courts and at the local, state, and federal levels.
