Westside Chapter Board Elections

Dear ACLU Member:

It is time for our 2022 Westside Chapter Board Election. ACLU Chapters are comprised of dedicated volunteers who work in partnership and coordination with ACLU staff to carry out advocacy, outreach, and engagement of local supporters to advance civil rights and liberties in their communities.

On this page, you can read candidate profiles, submit your vote, and, should you opt-in, stay connected with the ACLU of Southern California.

In accordance with our bylaws, ACLU members who reside in the chapter’s region elect Chapter Directors to open Board seats. Candidates are running for three-year terms and the board is composed of staggered terms to allow one-third of the Board to term-out every year.

This election is open to ACLU members only. To verify your eligibility as a member, enter the last three digits of your membership number before submitting your ballot. Given our strong stance on privacy rights, votes are kept in complete anonymity.

Votes must be submitted by Friday, September 30th at 11:59 p.m.

Thank you for your continued support,

Julie Alley

I have been a card-carrying member of the ACLU for over 30 years. I joined the ACLU after reading about the march in Skokie. I was impressed by the fact that the ACLU lawyers defended the free expression rights of the Nazis.

I have a BS in Medical Microbiology and worked as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in hospital laboratories for 13 years, until the multiple autoimmune diseases I had flared up, and I could no longer work full time.

I have volunteered all my life for environmental and human rights issues. Once I became disabled, I could devote much more time to volunteering. I volunteered in New York City for about 7 years. On returning to Los Angeles, I attended several ACLU sponsored events, and at one of them I was asked to join the ACLU Westside Chapter Board.

I am the current Vice President and I am running for another 3-year board term. In my current term I worked to expand the board, and the chapter. I have been active in all of the ACLU SoCal campaigns which include educational programs, phone banking, and lobbying locally and in Sacramento.

I am also part of ACLU’s People Power and have distributed Know Your Rights material and ACLU campaign materials at People Power meetings throughout Southern California; Santa Monica Coalition for Police Reform; and Veterans for Peace Los Angeles where I maintain a Know Your Rights section at our weekly Sunday event on the beach in Santa Monica.

I appreciate your vote.
