Decriminalizing Poverty Our failed criminal justice system is two-tiered: one system for people who can afford to buy their freedom, and another that traps people living in poverty in a hopeless maze with injustices at every turn.

Our work is grounded in the understanding that everyone has a role in ending mass incarceration. Please select the description that best describes you.

Formerly incarcerated. Refers to people who have experienced an extended period of incarceration through either pretrial detention or a post-conviction sentence which serves as a barrier to gainful employment, safe and affordable housing, quality education, and access to fair and reasonable financial products and services.

System-involved. Refers to people who have a record of arrest or other documented criminal record, which serves as a barrier to gainful employment, safe and affordable housing, quality education, and access to fair and reasonable financial products and services. Your responses will only be used by ACLU Hawaiʻi staff and will not be shared with others.

System-impacted. Refers to people who, either through personal relationships, or as a community member or taxpayer, are impacted negatively by the personal and financial costs of incarceration.

How would you like to get involved?

Write, call, and lobby your elected officials. Lobby your elected officials through phone calls, letter-writing, letters to the editor, phone banking, or in-person lobbying of your political representatives.

Organize your community. Take a leadership role in bringing like-minded people together in your community and introducing them to our campaigns. Work with our field organizers to plan events and coordinate grassroots actions in your community. Host a virtual ACLU of Hawai‘i house party or workshop.

Attend our actions and recruit new supporters. Join us for campaign events and grassroots actions and help us identify and recruit new supporters.

Mobilize supporters online. Join our digital mobilizing team focused on increasing the visibility and awareness of our campaign and pushing our supporters to take action.
