If you don't like a book, don't read it – or don't let your kids read it. It's as simple as that.

Banning books, threatening librarians, and penalizing those who don't comply with excessive monetary fines isn't the answer.

But a draft bill that the Legislature's Joint Judiciary Committee is considering sponsoring would do exactly that. This bill would require public and school library employees to make sure books that some consider inappropriate or objectionable aren't available to minors or face severe penalties. Those penalties? Fines up to $50,000 for each offense.

After hearing two hours of public testimony on this draft legislation in August – nearly all of which was in opposition – the committee postponed the vote on its sponsorship of the bill until Monday, October 13. But this time around, they've decided they don't want to hear from us at the meeting. That's why it's so important to let them know what you think before the meeting.

Contact the Joint Judiciary Committee now to ask them not to sponsor this bill for the 2026 legislative session. Use the draft the draft email below as a starting point – feel free to edit it and personalize your message.
