We Need to Know the Truth about the 287g Program

TAKE ACTION NOW

287(g) is a program that gives the job – immigration enforcement -- meant for the federal government to local law enforcement who receive little training and often use practices that amount to racial profiling.

Since November 2017, the ACLU of Maryland has been fighting to get more information about the 287g program from the Harford County Sheriff’s and through ICE. But they don't want to provide the facts.

I live in Harford County and care about both public safety and the civil rights of immigrant families in our county. That is why I am asking you to release the full details of how your office is implementing the federal 287(g) program in our county.

Is the program actually making our community safer? You say it is, so why don’t you just release the data if it truly shows that? Who are the people you are handing over to ICE and what did they do? Are you racial profiling by only targeting immigrants of color? Why is it more important that we figure out who has the right immigration documents than investigating actual crimes?

The bottom line is that we have the right to know how local police are being used in our community.

Please call on ICE to release, or authorize you to release, Harford County’s full 287(g) enforcement data to the public.

Sincerely,
