Protect Health Care Access in Washington

TAKE ACTION NOW

When you or someone you care about goes to the hospital, you deserve to be confident that your medical providers will be permitted to offer the best care possible. But in Washington state, this doesn't always happen. By restricting medically-necessary services to pregnant patients, health care entities discriminate and create harmful, unjust barriers to care. Demand a healthy Washington. Urge your legislator to support HB 2561: The protecting pregnancy and miscarriage-related patient care act. This bill would prevent health entities from interfering with a qualified health care practitioner’s ability to provide care to a patient who is miscarrying and whose health or life is at serious risk. This bill is necessary to address discrimination and to ensure patients get the care they need.

Support HB 2561: Protecting Patient Care Act
Dear Legislator:

I write to urge you to support HB 2561. This bill is essential to protect pregnant patients’ access to care and prevent discrimination.

When you or someone you care about goes to the hospital, you deserve to be confident that your medical providers will be permitted to provide the best care possible. In the event of pregnancy loss, a pregnant person and their family should not have to worry that they won’t receive appropriate care because of a hospital’s policies. However, in Washington state, women experiencing miscarriages have had their care delayed or have been turned away from hospitals due to health entity restrictions unrelated to medical necessity. The result is significant and unnecessary risk to the health and lives of pregnant patients.

By restricting the services a health care provider may offer to a pregnant patient, entities are creating harmful, unjust barriers to care. For patients who are miscarrying, and especially for those living in rural areas with only one health care facility available to them, these restrictions can be insurmountable and life-threatening. They needlessly and disproportionately harm women and communities of color.

Please support HB 2561. This bill would prevent health entities from interfering with a qualified health care practitioner’s ability to provide care to a patient who is miscarrying and whose health or life is at serious risk.

This bill is necessary to address discrimination and to ensure patients get the care they need.

I urge you to support HB 2561 (as introduced).

Sincerely,
