Pass Proposition 5 to Protect Reproductive Liberty

Act Now

An individual's right to reproductive autonomy is central to the liberty and dignity of determining one's own life course.

When it comes to the most important decisions in life, such as whether to become a parent, every person should have the right to determine their own life course regardless of their race, gender, religion, income, or zip code.

For far too long, politicians across the country have interfered with our health decisions by restricting access to reproductive health.

The U.S. Supreme Court poses an imminent threat to the constitutional right to abortion. Right now, there are more than a dozen cases threatening a person's right to reproductive liberty. If the U.S. Supreme Court were to overturn Roe v. Wade – the 1973 decision which established a legal right to abortion – people's constitutional rights in Vermont could be threatened.

To ensure we preserve the right to determine our own life course here in Vermont, we must guarantee the right to personal reproductive freedom for all Vermonters by passing Proposition 5, the Reproductive Liberty Amendment.

If passed by the legislature and the voters, the Reproductive Liberty Amendment would guarantee Vermonters the right to become pregnant and carry a pregnancy to term; to choose or refuse sterilization; to choose abortion, and to choose or refuse contraception. A constitutional amendment allows Vermonters an opportunity to preserve these liberties. This is one of the most effective tools to ensure the reproductive rights of everyone in our state.

That is why we are asking you to contact your state representative(s) and tell them to pass the Reproductive Liberty Amendment when they return to the State House in January.

I am writing today to ask you to pass Proposition 5, the Reproductive Liberty Amendment, when the legislature convenes in January. Proposition 5 will help preserve the right to determine our own life course and guarantee the right to personal reproductive liberty for all Vermonters.

The House of Representatives must pass Proposition 5 this session for voters to have the opportunity to explicitly enshrine reproductive liberty in our constitution. That is why I am asking you and your colleagues to take up and pass the Reproductive Liberty Amendment when the legislature convenes in January.

Sincerely,
