Support S. 127 for Immigrant Housing Access

Act Now

Enhancing equal housing protections has never been more important. We currently face deeply concerning affronts to the rights and protections of immigrants both nationwide and in Vermont. The detention of students exercising free speech, the revoking of legal status for Vermont refugees, and the recent mass arrest of Vermont dairy workers within employer-provided housing has made it clear that our state can and should do more to protect our neighbors. Providing access to housing free from harassment and danger can help prevent devastating events like this from occurring again in our state – but we need your support.

That is why we are asking lawmakers to support S. 127. This legislation would increase access to housing for immigrants by creating housing discrimination protections against immigrants and preventing landlords from asking about immigration status – and lawmakers need to hear from you about this important bill.

I am writing to request your support for a proposal to expand housing access to immigrant families in Vermont. With mounting attacks against immigrant rights in this country and in Vermont, the issue is critical and urgent. Specifically, S.127 adds citizenship and immigration status as a protected class to Vermont's Fair Housing and Public Accommodations Act and allows landlords to accept alternatives to Social Security numbers during the housing application process - two policy efforts championed by several other states. Please support S.127 to advance this important proposal.

Vermont can also make a critical state-level commitment to the equal protection of all residents by providing immigrants recourse for violations of housing rights, including discriminatory housing refusal in sales, rentals, and public accommodations and harassment of current occupants.

Sincerely,
