Immigrants are valued members of our communities, and it is vital that they be treated with dignity and respect – especially at a time when their rights are under attack. The Trump administration has disregarded both the law and standards of basic human decency in attempting to carry out a mass deportation agenda. This is not something happening in the abstract, or somewhere else. It is happening in our state, and we know Vermonters want to take action to protect their friends and neighbors. While the ACLU and our allies fight in the courts, we are also calling on the legislature and the Governor to put stronger protections in law.

Vermont has led the way in the past by embracing policies to ensure our state law enforcement resources are focused on the needs of our state and not supporting a national deportation agenda.

Immigrants are valued members of our communities, and it is vital that they be treated with dignity and respect--especially at a time when their rights are under attack by a hostile federal government. I am writing today to ask you to pass legislation that can better protect immigrants here in Vermont.

Vermont has led the way in this cause in the past by enacting laws prohibiting ICE arrests at court houses, putting limits on collaborative agreements between the state and ICE, and passing a fair and impartial policing policy that ensures our state law enforcement resources are focused on the needs of our state and not supporting a national deportation agenda.

This session, the legislature has passed S.44 to limit cooperation between law enforcement and federal officials without approval of the governor, S.56, which begins the process of creating an office of New Americans, and H.98, which offers protections for children if their parents are involved in immigration enforcement.

The legislature currently has several bills under consideration that, if passed and strengthened, could significantly improve people's lives. We hope you will take action on these before the end of the session.
