Tell Governor Scott: We need to bring Vermont prisoners home

TAKE ACTION NOW

After reports of abuse and neglect and multiple deaths among Vermont’s prisoners at Camp Hill in Pennsylvania, Vermont’s DOC has decided to move prisoners to Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility, a private prison in Mississippi. The prison is owned and operated by CoreCivic (formerly Corrections Corporation of America), a notorious private prison company with a long record of mismanagement and abuse.

Vermont cannot keep shuttling inmates from prison to prison, and saying “we have no choice” is not good enough. Vermont does have a choice: we can use smart justice reforms to safely reduce the prison population until all inmates can be housed in Vermont facilities close to their families, the communities they will eventually re-enter, and the state officials who are responsible for their welfare.

Our Governor needs to do more to help achieve these goals. Email Governor Scott today and ask him to commit to decreasing Vermont’s prison population and to keeping taxpayer dollars out of the pockets of private prison companies.

Your Message
Dear Governor Scott,

I strongly disagree with the DOC’s decision to send Vermont prisoners to Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Mississippi. It is unacceptable for Vermont to continue to shuttle prisoners from prison to prison out-of-state, and it is unacceptable for Vermont to do business with private prison companies, particularly CoreCivic, a company with a terrible record of mismanagement and abuse.

We must grapple with the consequences of over-incarceration in our state, and I’m calling on your administration to commit to bringing Vermont prisoners home once and for all.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Sincerely,
