On May 9, 2024, South Carolina lawmakers passed a bill that would block transgender young people and their families from accessing medically necessary healthcare. If signed into law, H. 4624 would interfere with the medical decisions made between patients, their family members, and their medical providers.

Gender-affirming care is lifesaving and necessary. As with other forms of healthcare, it would be a violation of our rights under the U.S. Constitution for our government to deny it to patients on the basis of their gender identity.

Tell our governor to veto this unconstitutional bill that would restrict the right of transgender people and their families to make their own healthcare decisions.

I am a South Carolinian asking you to veto H. 4624, a bill that would interfere with the rights of transgender youth and their families to obtain healthcare.

Our lawmakers think they know better than parents and their doctors how to care for children, but I am asking you, as a proponent of small government, to keep the government out of decisions that are best made by families and their physicians.

An Arkansas law like the one you're considering has been blocked by the federal courts, who found the ban violated the Equal Protection Clause, the Due Process Clauses, and the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has also blocked trans healthcare bans in North Carolina and West Virginia, writing that "coverage exclusions facially discriminate on the basis of sex and gender identity, and are not substantially related to an important government interest."

Leading medical associations, South Carolina pediatricians, and now the courts have made it clear: Bills restricting gender-affirming care are harmful to transgender people, and they're unconstitutional. I am asking you to respect the freedom of all South Carolina children and their families.
