Tell your lawmaker to pass same-day voter registration.

Voter registration deadlines are unnecessary barriers to the polls and disproportionately keep marginalized communities from voting. Virginia is the second-hardest state in the nation to cast a ballot, partly because of useless restrictions like registration deadlines.

Virginia should join the 19 other states with same-day voter registration. Other states have seen a 7-10 percent increase in voter turnout after allowing same-day registration. We are needlessly keeping hundreds of thousands of Virginians from the ballot box. It's time to drop this restriction.

Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. Allowing same-day voter registration will make it easier for Virginians to cast a ballot. As my representative, I urge you to pass same-day voter registration in the 2020 legislative session.

Same-day registration also allows voters to fix errors or mistakes on their registration without having to cast a provisional ballot which may or may not be counted. This not only ensures that the voter rolls are more accurate, it saves time and resources for cities and counties by all but eliminating the need for provisional ballots.

We need to make it easier for people to vote, and that starts with getting rid of voter registration deadlines that disproportionately silence marginalized communities from the political process.
