Don’t Pick Up the Tab to Defend Discrimination

TAKE ACTION NOW

Two years after they first tried to target transgender youth for discrimination, state lawmakers are back at it again.

This time, the Tennessee General Assembly is considering SB 2480/HB 2620, legislation that would force the state attorney general to defend any local education agency or its employees when they discriminate against transgender children by enforcing policies that limit access to single-sex spaces based on “biological sex.”

This is just another attempt by legislators to target transgender students for discrimination in schools and push trans people out of public life. Being separated from other students is especially harmful for transgender children, who already face an increased risk of bullying and stress, and the anxiety and depression that come with such treatment.

This measure would encourage school districts to violate federal law and then force the state to spend taxpayer money defending their discriminatory practices – while doing nothing to increase access to education, safety or privacy.

TAKE ACTION: Urge lawmakers to drop their latest attempt to target trans youth.
