Stop Tennessee From Becoming A "Show Me Your Papers" State

TAKE ACTION NOW

State lawmakers are taking up an extreme bill that would turn all local and state law enforcement officers into unpaid federal immigration agents.

SB 2332/HB 2315 would require all state and local law enforcement agencies to enter into 287(g) agreements with the federal government, prohibit any local policies that limit entanglement with federal immigration enforcement, and strip state funding from localities that do not comply.

Tennessee taxpayers will foot the bill for this scheme. Numerous counties participating in 287(g) have paid millions of dollars for the program in the first year alone – tax dollars that have been diverted away from local policing priorities to federal immigration enforcement.

In the process, this bill would invite racial profiling and erode immigrants' trust in police, leading to underreporting of crime by victims and witnesses. Eroding community-police relations makes the work of local law enforcement more difficult, compromising public safety for the entire community.

TAKE ACTION: Urge legislators not to turn Tennessee into a "show me your papers" state.
