President Trump has deployed thousands of military troops to American cities – and he’s threatened to send them to New York too. Doing so would be a baseless, weak, and authoritarian move to intimidate his political opponents, sow disorder, and expand his power.

Troops in New York are unneeded and unwelcome.New York leaders must take all lawful measures to protect New Yorkers against the president’s attempts to send troops to invade New York. And they must fight back in court if he deploys them against Gov. Hochul’s wishes.

With threats continuing to emerge from a Trump administration intent on stifling dissent, emboldening biased and abusive policing, supercharging deportations, expanding invasive surveillance, and dismantling social safety nets, New York City needs to do everything in its power to meet the moment.

Troops in New York are unneeded and unwelcome. I’m writing to ask you to take all lawful measures to protect New Yorkers against the president’s attempts to send troops to invade New York. And you should fight back in court if he deploys them against your wishes.

There is no public safety justification for military deployment to New York City. Crime has fallen and continues to drop, and the city boasts the largest municipal police force in the world, with nearly 34,000 officers on the payroll.

In fact, troops would make New York City less safe. The National Guard isn’t trained to police civilians – they’re trained for natural disasters and combat. Ordering troops to police civilians not only puts New Yorkers’ rights at risk, but it also puts soldiers in legal and ethical jeopardy, and directs troops away from legitimate emergencies.

Since National Guard troops are maintained by states, New York leaders like you have a critical role in ensuring lawful, appropriate use of law enforcement powers here in our state. It is essential that you reject Trump’s abuse of emergency powers, counter the fearmongering, and refute Trump’s excuses for his power grab.

You should do all you can to resist this authoritarian overreach by:

• denying any request to use the New York Guard,
• immediately taking any appropriate action in court if any national guard troops are deployed against the governor's wishes,
• using your platforms to condemn Trump’s anti-democratic abuses, and
• doing everything you can to ensure no state or local resources – including law enforcement resources – fuel Trump’s deportation machine.
