On May 18, Ohio Gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy published an op-ed in the Cincinnati Enquirer titled, “Ohio Must Enshrine Voter ID in its Constitution.” Later that day, members of the Ohio Legislature announced committee hearings for new resolutions – SJR 10 and HJR 9 – that will do precisely that, enshrine strict voter ID laws into our state’s highest governing document. This coordinated attack on our free and fair elections must not be ignored.

The Ohio Constitution exists to protect people’s liberties, not to restrict our access to the ballot by making it harder for eligible voters to participate in our democratic process by mandating a photo ID.

For this proposal to be on the November 2026 ballot, the joint resolution must pass each chamber with 3/5 support; 20 votes in the Senate and 60 in the House. Time is of the essence – our elected officials are manufacturing a fake crisis to sway electoral outcomes.

I urge you to reject the joint resolutions that will weaponize our constitution by preventing eligible Ohioans from voting.

We the people should be able to exercise our sacred right to vote, free from aggressive government and overreach and unnecessarily roadblocks. Our constitution does not need to be amended in such a hasty, rushed manner. There are far more pressing issues impacting your constituents – this effort is a waste of time and resources when Ohio families need real solutions to real problems. SJR 10 and HJR 9 are solutions to problems that do not exist. Photo ID laws for voting are already in place, and there is no valid “urgent rationale” to make this a priority for the November election.

As an extremely concerned resident, I implore members of the Ohio General Assembly to stop manipulating the democratic system for your own political gain. Between gerrymandering, strict ID laws, and aggressive changes to Ohio’s absentee ballot process, we the people have had enough. The attacks on our freedom and sacred right to vote are at an all-time high.

Public servants have a duty to govern on behalf of the individuals they represent. The Ohio Constitution was created to protect the people from their government, not the other way around.

I strongly urge you to reject the weaponization of the Ohio Constitution and vote NO on SJR 10 and HJR 9.
