In Oregon, we value freedom for everyone, and we believe no community should be discriminated against by the government because of who they are — including the transgender community. Every Oregonian — including trans youth and adults — should have the freedom to make personal decisions about the medical care we need, with our doctors and loved ones, without harassment and interference from politicians.

President Trump has shown a clear agenda to use his presidential powers to make it impossible for trans people to live their lives without discrimination, harassment, and cruelty by the federal government. Most recently, he issued an executive order directing federal agencies to deny critical federal funds to healthcare organizations that provide necessary, life-saving care to transgender Oregonians under the age of 19. If put into effect, this order will make it much harder for transgender people to get medical care, and would destabilize healthcare in our state altogether, making medical care for many Oregonians — regardless of their gender identity — more difficult to access.

Disturbingly, politicians in Oregon are pushing Trump’s discriminatory agenda of denying medically-necessary, often life-saving care to Oregonians — even though this will have considerable negative impacts on our state. State Representative Dwayne Yunker sent an official letter to Oregon Health Science University (OHSU) calling for the closure of their Gender Clinic Services.

The ACLU is fighting back! Last week, we filed a lawsuit to stop Trump from withholding critical federal funds from our hospitals. Attorney General Rayfield also filed a lawsuit to stop Trump’s aggression towards Oregonians and our basic individual rights. You can fight back too by telling our state lawmakers: Stop Trump’s fascist attacks on Oregon’s trans youth!

The ACLU will continue to defend the freedoms of all Oregonians and resist politicians’ attempts to engage in the politics of division, hate, and bullying.
