For years, health care in Arizona prisons has been insufficient, and even deadly.

Governor Doug Ducey could fix it, but he hasn’t.

In fact, when a federal judge found the Arizona Department of Corrections in contempt for violating a legal settlement and failing to improve prison health care conditions, Governor Ducey stood behind prisons director Charles Ryan.

Governor Ducey created a “second-chance” program to help people find jobs after prison. But if inadequate prison health care makes you unable to work, these second chances never materialize.

People in prison deserve better health care

It is disheartening to hear that the Arizona Department of Corrections violated a legal settlement and failed to improve health care conditions in state prisons. As Governor, you have the power to immediately take action and fix the rampant problems that are causing needless suffering and even death. Instead, you chose to stand behind prisons director Charles Ryan. This is shameful.

Your administration has created a "second chance" program to help people find jobs after prison. But if inadequate prison health care makes people unable to work, these "second chances" will never materialize. Real second chances start with good health.

Sincerely,
