Take Action! Demand a county attorney who values people, not prisons

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will soon appoint an interim county attorney to replace Bill Montgomery. Montgomery was appointed to the Arizona Supreme Court despite his long record of violating the rights of Arizona's most marginalized communities through harsh, intolerant policies.

We need to be sure whoever takes Montgomery's spot will be someone who recognizes the urgent need for reform within the Maricopa County Attorney's Office and is determined to fix it.

Email the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors today and ask them to appoint a county attorney who will:

  • Commit to properly investigating and handling claims of prosecutorial misconduct
  • Commit to being transparent with the public
  • Work to reduce the prison population
  • Challenge racism in the criminal legal system
  • pledge to not seek election in 2020

I am a Maricopa County resident and I am writing to ask you to appoint an interim county attorney who recognizes the urgent need for reform within the Maricopa County Attorney's Office and is determined to fix it. I also think you should appoint someone who pledges to not seek election in 2020.

Finally, we urge you to appoint a county attorney who will pledge to not run for election in 2020. Voters should be allowed to fairly decide who their next county attorney will be. Status as an incumbent will give the interim county attorney an unfair advantage in a contentious race when the voters of Maricopa County will not have had a say in their appointment. This is fundamentally undemocratic. We urge the Board of Supervisors to respect the democratic process and appoint a true interim county attorney to address the concerns listed above, not to consolidate political power or advance their political careers.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
