Support the IL Healthy Youth Act
Dear State Representatives,

Young people across the State of Illinois need expanded and updated comprehensive sexual health education standards in our public schools, standards that are inclusive and affirming of young people too long stigmatized and ignored.

The Healthy Youth Act (HB 5012 and SB 3788) provides youth a full toolbox of knowledge and skills, building on the current standards for health and sexual health education courses taught around the State of Illinois.

The new law includes critical information for young people – and all people – to reduce harm and support overall well-being not only in their teens, but throughout their entire lives:

o Puberty, growth, and adolescent development;
o Anatomy and physiology;
o Healthy relationships and friendships;
o Healthy decision-making;
o Personal safety;
o Identity;
o Pregnancy and reproduction; and,
o Effective communications.

It expands the current requirement that instruction be medically accurate, developmentally and age appropriate to include instruction that is also culturally and linguistically appropriate and adapted for students with disabilities and non-English speaking students.

The Healthy Youth Act (HB 5012 and SB 3788) importantly ensures that sexual health education in Illinois is inclusive and affirming of populations who have historically been invisible or stigmatized including LGBTQIA and pregnant or parenting youth.

I urge you to support the Healthy Youth Act.

Sincerely,
