The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case securing abortion access, put abortion rights at risk nationwide. It’s more important than ever for Delaware to ensure that we remain a safe haven for access to care.

Currently, the cost of abortion places financial hurdles in front of patient care – those who can afford to pay or have insurance that covers abortion can receive care, while those who can’t afford the cost of care either can’t receive it or must make difficult financial decisions.

Delaware lawmakers have introduced a critical bill, HB 110, legislation that ensures that people on Medicaid, private, and state insurance plans are able to access abortion care without financial burden. Funding abortion care through Medicaid, private, and state insurance will help break down socioeconomic barriers and address racial disparities in reproductive health.

Real access to abortion care means that people from all walks of life–young people, low-income people, those who live far from medical providers, and disabled people–are able to access care. Even people with health insurance may not be able to shoulder the additional cost of a medical procedure, meaning they may have to shift critical funds for rent, food, childcare, transportation, or other medical expenses.

Right now, we have the opportunity to enhance abortion protection in Delaware and ensure abortion services are accessible for all who need it. Delaware has already been a leader by guaranteeing abortion rights in state law. Now we need to take additional steps to ensure that right is accessible to all who need it.
