We all need a safe place to sleep. With rents soaring and incomes failing to keep up, this is increasingly difficult for many Americans. Yet, facing a surging housing crisis, the Trump administration is choosing to invest in arresting, jailing, and forcibly institutionalizing homeless people rather than affordable housing and other known solutions.

Criminalizing sleeping outside does nothing to address the root causes of homelessness, mental health needs, or addiction. Arrests and encampment sweeps separate people from essential support systems, saddle them with records that can disqualify them from employment and housing opportunities, and force people to start over with nothing.

We need policies that protect our rights, dignity, and lives, not punish people with nowhere else to go. Send a message to Congress and demand that they protect the rights of unhoused people.

We need Congress to prioritize real solutions to the homelessness crisis, like affordable housing, access to medical care, and robust funding for voluntary, community-based programs to address mental health and substance use.
