Reckless ICE and Border Patrol operations in Minneapolis and across the country are hurting children, families, and our communities – and now have even shot and killed people in the streets, including Alex Jeffrey Pretti and Renee Nicole Good. Congress must act now to rein in these agents and oppose any bill that would add to its already massive budget without serious reforms.
As a member of Congress, you have a responsibility to hold ICE accountable for these abuses and demand answers – for the safety of every person that you represent. And now you have a chance to do it.
Specifically, I'm urging you to block any DHS funding bill unless it includes provisions to:
• Stop the rampant racial profiling, the warrantless stops and arrests, the roving patrols, and the detention of toddlers and children
• Enforce actual accountability for abuse by immigration agents – including real limits on use of force and surveillance of protesters and rules that allow victims to hold federal agents who injure them accountable in court
• Mandate agents identify themselves, take off their masks, wear and use body cameras, and ensure that footage is available for investigations and accountability
Not one dollar more should go to ICE or DHS until these accountability measures are implemented. We cannot sit idly by as our neighbors are killed, injured, and terrorized. None of us wants to live in a police state where paramilitary forces demand to see our papers, menace our kids, or assault us. I hope you'll act immediately to stop ICE's escalation and protect us all.
