Stop HB 616, Ohio’s shameful “Don’t Say Gay, Don’t Mention Race” bill
Ohio lawmakers have introduced legislation combining an even broader curriculum ban than in HB 327 with some of the worst aspects of Florida’s infamous “Don’t Say Gay” law. House Bill 616 would restrict or outright ban any mention of sexual orientation or gender identity in grades K-12. It would also restrict the teaching of several poorly defined “divisive concepts” including “diversity, equity, and inclusion learning outcomes,” and “any other concept that the state board of education defines as divisive or inherently racist.”
At a time when LGBTQ+ youth are at higher risk for mental health illness and suicide, and curriculum bans are being introduced all over the country, we are doing everything we can to stop HB 616. Together, we will show young LGBTQ+ Ohioans that they belong and they are valued. It is imperative that our classrooms remain a welcoming space where teachers and students can have honest conversations about our history in the context of race and identity.
TAKE ACTION: contact the members of the House State and Local Government Committee and urge them to STOP HB 616 from advancing.
