Stop Anti-Trans Hate in Nassau

Act Now

The Nassau County Legislature in Long Island has voted in favor of a bill that bars trans women and girls from participating in girls’ and women’s sports at county-run facilities. This legislation is an abhorrent, transphobic bill designed to shut trans people out of public spaces. It also violates state law.

Tell Nassau County leaders to stop hateful attacks on trans New Yorkers.

Veto the illegal anti-trans bill

The Nassau County Legislature voted to pass legislation barring trans women and girls from participating in girls’ and women’s sports at county-run facilities. This legislation is a harmful, transphobic bill designed to shut trans people out of public spaces. It is also blatantly illegal.

I’m writing to tell you to veto this bill and stop the attacks on trans New Yorkers.

This legislation clearly violates New York State’s Human Rights Law and Civil Rights Law, which explicitly prohibit discrimination based on gender identity.

Make no mistake: When this bill is challenged in court, it will be struck down. Rather than wasting constituents’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars on defending this hateful, unlawful legislation in a losing court battle, you should do everything you can to put a stop to this bill.

To ban trans girls from girls’ sports teams, officials would have to make invasive inquiries about cis girls’ and trans girls’ bodies and gender identities alike, intrude upon their privacy and bodily autonomy, and “out” people as transgender.

Requiring girls who are trans to compete on boys’ teams, or boys who are trans to compete on girls’ teams, effectively excludes them from participating at all. Participating would mean being outed and being denied the same opportunities other girls enjoy: to challenge themselves, improve fitness, and be part of a team of their peers.

Trans people who play sports need support and affirmation, not to be a political target. Bans like these also speak to growing, nationwide attacks against LGBTQ+ rights, and we cannot tolerate this hatred here in New York.

Instead of spending taxpayer dollars to defend a hateful, cynical, and doomed piece of legislation, you should do everything you can to prevent this bill from becoming law.

Sincerely,
