The message:

UPDATE: Senator Alex Padilla was forcibly removed, pushed to the ground, and handcuffed by Trump administration officials at Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem’s press conference in LA.

This is another unacceptable and un-American action by the Trump administration. Our elected officials have a right – and a duty – to conduct oversight of President Trump's abuses of power. In a democracy, we do not arrest or intimidate perceived political opponents over disagreements. Yet the Trump administration is doing exactly that – turning the power of the federal government against anyone who doesn't toe the line – whether it's members of Congress, mayors, judges, protesters, or now, even Senators.

This isn’t the first arrest, detention, or intimidation attempt of an elected official who sought to check the Trump administration’s power – but it must be the last. Targeting elected officials and judges for defending our rights and opposing the president's abuses is straight out of an authoritarian’s playbook – and we must act immediately: Tell the Trump administration to stop these abuses of power now.

The recipient:

Secretary Kristi Noem, Department of Homeland Security
Director Kash Patel, Federal Bureau of Investigation

We put in some suggestions, but make the message your own where possible!

Subject:

Arresting political opponents threatens our democracy

Body:

Using force against those who challenge the Trump administration – including sitting elected officials – is unacceptable and un-American. Your agency must stop impeding congressional oversight and targeting the Trump administration's political opponents.

Arrests, detention, or violence as intimidation are not legitimate political tools, and your actions could deteriorate our system of checks and balances – and democracy – for years to come.

Sincerely,
