TAKE ACTION NOW: Contact your U.S. Representatives to take action to Shut Down Glades Detention Center
For many years, immigrants at the Glades County Detention Center have experienced racialized violence, sexual abuse, medical neglect, inhumane treatment, and threats to to their safety and lives.
At Glades, there is a systemic and consistent pattern of racism towards Black immigrants. Recently, the facility’s director suggested he would leave a noose in a Black immigrant’s cell, and racially-based complaints on behalf of at least 10 Black immigrants have been filed. Black immigrants also face disproportionate use of force, threats and intimidation, pepper spray, solitary confinement, extreme forms of physical violence, off-camera physical assault, and racialized verbal abuse. While these incidents are not new, they have continued at an alarming rate under this Administration.
The abuse does not stop there. In the last few months, people in the facility were hospitalized as a result of a carbon monoxide leak and the overuse of toxic chemicals. At least 35 civil rights complaints have been filed related to treatment at Glades since the onset of the pandemic.
Enough is enough. We need to shut down Glades now.
