Update 12/21/2018: On December 21, the FIRST STEP Act became law, passing with overwhelming support in the House and Senate. Thanks to our collective action, thousands of incarcerated people who received unjust sentences will see immediate benefits. But our fight isn't over – find more ways to help further civil rights and liberties for all.
Right now, we have the chance to win urgently needed criminal justice reforms with the Senate's FIRST STEP Act.
This bill addresses sentencing laws – pivotal drivers of mass incarceration on the federal level. The bill would improve the lives of people harmed by our broken criminal justice system by reducing the mandatory sentences for the "three strikes and you're out" law related to drug offenses and retroactively evaluating the sentences of over 2,600 incarcerated people.
The ball is in the Senate's court to vote on this bill and send it to the president's desk – and this Congress is our best shot at passing the bill. Send a message to your senators now urging them to pass the FIRST STEP Act and begin transforming our broken criminal justice system.
