Technological innovation has outpaced our privacy protections. As a result, our digital footprint can be tracked by corporations in ways that were once unthinkable.
A bill heading to the South Dakota Senate floor would strengthen protections for South Dakotans' personal data.
Senate Bill 111 would require that any social media company with over 500,000 active monthly users provide collected personal data of a South Dakota user at the user's request.
Social media companies collect vast amounts of data about their users – everything from our names and locations, to what we're looking at and for how long, to what kind of device we use to get online. Our data is ours. We should be able to see what personal information of ours is being collected and how private companies are using it whenever we want to.
Will you drop a note to your legislators asking them to support this bill?
