From pre-teen survivors of sexual assault to women carrying deeply loved pregnancies that will not survive to people who know having a child isn't right for them at this time, abortion is needed in many complex and varying circumstances.
Medication abortion is a safe and reliable option.
But House Bill 1274 would make delivering abortion medication a felony in South Dakota and trigger a new era of state surveillance over personal reproductive health. This is unacceptable.
By restricting how mifepristone and misoprostol are prescribed and distributed by out-of-state providers, House Bill 1274 interferes with the provider-patient relationship and complicates the delivery of essential health care. On top of that, there's no way for the state to enforce this bill without invasive monitoring of shipping records, pharmacy data, telehealth communications, and even private digital messages.
Medication abortion has been proven to be safe and effective. Criminalizing health care providers and those seeking care is government overreach, and any restrictions on medication abortion are medically and legally unjustified.
Please let your lawmakers know that South Dakotans oppose House Bill 1274.
