Tell Tiverton leaders: Protect our privacy from surveillance!

The message:

The RI State Police have asked the Tiverton Town Council to allow them to install a Flock Safety brand automated license plate reader (ALPR) camera in Tiverton.

Tiverton is one of 21 other cities and towns in Rhode Island to receive this request, and the RISP have stated they plan to install 39 Flock Safety ALPRs around the state. Warren and Portsmouth both recently rejected this proposal. Tiverton already has two municipal-owned Flock Safety cameras that are also operating without safeguards for privacy in place.

Flock Safety cameras can capture much more information than just license plates, and they can share that data with other police departments and federal agencies across the country, creating a network of surveillance technology. For example, Flock Safety camera data from local police nationwide has been used by ICE to find and target people, and was used by police in Texas to find a woman who was seeking an abortion.

The issue: Regardless of what the police say their intentions are in using the system, there are no guardrails in state law or town ordinance protecting our privacy rights, our data, or government transparency in the usage of Flock Safety cameras.

That's why we need your voice to tell them that you oppose expanding this intrusive surveillance technology in Tiverton without meaningful safeguards in place. We've given you a template below, edit the middle paragraph to explain why privacy is important to you!
