While the Presidential Administration is on a campaign of cruelty against immigrants, we have the opportunity this Rhode Island legislative session to help eliminate a loophole in our laws that can result in unduly harsh immigration consequences for people charged with minor crimes in Rhode Island.

For example, under the current laws, a person with a green card is at risk of deportation for a first-time shoplifting offense.

Contact your Represenatatives and urge them to support S 63 and H 5502 by using the form below. The Senate has already passed the bill, and now it needs to pass out of House Judiciary committee and then pass the full House.

Please support S 63 and H 5502, which would resolve a conflict between federal immigration law and Rhode Island law by changing the maximum prison sentence for a misdemeanor offense from one year to 364 days.

Currently, an immigrant, even someone with a green card, who is convicted of an offense punishable by a sentence of "a year or more," may be deported, even if no jail time is served. That is because, in Rhode Island, misdemeanors carry potential sentences of "up to one year."
