Ohio legislators are currently considering several bills to further the Trump Administration’s inhumane, anti-immigrant agenda in Ohio. House Bill 26 is an initiative that would force local and state law enforcement to partner with the federal government for any type of enforcement of immigration laws, including 287(g).
Across the country, we have witnessed the reckless terrorization of communities by immigration enforcement. Allowing local police to carry out partnerships, like 287(g), is opening the door for unconstitutional practices, lawsuits, and financial liabilities. This is due to the extreme nuance of immigration law and the lack of adequate funding and training provided to local law enforcement.
HB 26 would allow for the weaponization of local law enforcement front and center statewide, while stoking a culture of fear, racial profiling, and distrust within communities. Compliance with ICE does not improve public safety but rather threatens the livelihood of citizens and non-citizens alike. We need look no further than Minneapolis and the government’s brutal killings of lawful observers and American citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good.
