Protect reproductive rights now

The Trump administration has put abortion access in its crosshairs, tried to rollback contraceptive coverage and waged an all-out war on women. New York must be a leader in fighting against this onslaught.

We have a unique opportunity to make sure women’s reproductive rights are front-and-center in Albany. This year’s state budget should include a Women’s Agenda that would make big strides toward reproductive freedom in New York.

Five provisions of a strong Women’s Agenda would advance access to reproductive health care, decriminalize abortion in New York State, increase access to contraception, reduce maternal mortality, improve comprehensive sex education and secure funding for reproductive health care.

TAKE ACTION: The budget will be hammered out in the next few days. Tell state leaders they can’t trade away women’s rights at the negotiating table.

This year, you have a unique opportunity to make sure women’s reproductive rights are front-and-center in this year’s state budget. The budget should include a Women’s Agenda that would make big strides toward reproductive freedom in New York.

While you work to finalize the budget in the coming days, don’t trade away women’s rights at the negotiating table.

Five provisions of a strong Women’s Agenda would:

Decriminalize abortion: The budget should fully repeal abortion from the state’s penal code, and move it to the public health law. Abortion isn’t a crime and our laws shouldn’t treat it like one.

Secure contraception insurance coverage: The Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act should be in the final budget. It would make birth control, a critical tool for women to gain economic and social independence, accessible and affordable.

Create a maternal mortality review board: Black women in New York are nearly four times more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth than white women. This board is a first step toward eliminating wide disparities in maternal health care and lowering maternal mortality for all women.

Improve comprehensive sex education: New York does not have standards to teach comprehensive sex education. This is a critical tool to reduce sexual assault and harassment as well as improve the well-being and education outcomes of students. Comprehensive sex-ed should be required for all students in our state.

Ensure reproductive health care funding: By fully funding the state’s Family Planning Grant, the state will guarantee that cost is never a barrier to primary and preventive reproductive health care.

Make New York State a leader in reproductive rights by passing the Women’s Agenda in this year’s budget.

Sincerely,
