Protect NYC's Sanctuary Laws

Act Now

Every New Yorker wants to feel safe in their community. We should all be able to go about our days without living in fear. New York City’s decades-old sanctuary laws have made the city safer, supported our economy, strengthened our communities, and made it easier for people to access vital services. But Mayor Adams is increasingly aligning himself with the Trump administration's anti-immigrant agenda. He wants to undermine our well-established sanctuary laws by pushing for more collusion with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

TELL CITY COUNCIL: Safeguard New York’s sanctuary policies and defend immigrant New Yorkers.

Every New Yorker wants to feel safe and thrive in their community. But Mayor Adams is threatening to undermine New York City’s well-established and successful sanctuary policies in alignment with President Trump’s cruel and destructive mass deportation agenda. The mayor wants to give city officers a permission slip to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In doing so, he could make all of us less safe.

I’m writing to tell you to protect New York’s well-established sanctuary laws and to demand that Mayor Adams defend immigrant New Yorkers.

For years, ICE has leaned on local law enforcement and government agencies to carry out arrests, deportations, and family separations. Trump has made it clear that this will only continue to escalate under his administration.

Because of this, many immigrant New Yorkers and their families across the state live with the anxiety that going about their daily lives in the open and interacting with government – whether in a police traffic stop, attending school, or visiting a public hospital for care – could lead to being torn away from family. Evidence shows that when governments adopt these kinds of policies, it makes our communities safer for everyone because immigrants aren’t afraid to reach out to authorities when they need help.

New York City’s sanctuary law generally prohibits local authorities from enforcing federal immigration laws, funneling people into ICE custody, and sharing sensitive information with federal immigration authorities.

But now Mayor Adams wants to get the city more involved in federal immigration enforcement, threatening to rip families, neighborhoods, and entire communities apart while devastating our economy and tarnishing New York’s legacy as a place where immigrants help our state thrive.

New York City leaders must strengthen – not walk away from – our city’s commitment to immigrant New Yorkers.

You must resist Mayor Adams’s efforts to undermine our sanctuary laws, and stick up for our immigrant neighbors and every other person that calls New York City home.

Sincerely,
