Support SB 818!

Young people in every part of Illinois need the most current and comprehensive personal health and safety, and sexual health education in order to develop the knowledge and skills to be safe and make healthy decisions throughout their lives. Those standards currently are antiquated and out-moded. They are not serving all students by providing the information they need.

Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act (SB 818) addresses this deficit. The bill creates personal health and safety standards for grades K-5 and updates and expands comprehensive sexual health education standards in grades 6-12 to give young people the information and tools they need to be safe and support responsible and informed decision making about their health and well-being throughout their lives. These new standards will align with the National Sex Education Standards to provide young people in Illinois with a full toolbox of knowledge and skills.

Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act expands the current requirement that instruction be medically accurate, developmentally and age appropriate to include instruction that also is culturally appropriate, inclusive, and trauma informed.

I urge you to sponsor and support the Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act.

Sincerely,
