Oppose Efforts to Roll Back the End of Cash Bail

SEND MESSAGE

Throughout Illinois, many people are held in jail awaiting trial simply because they are unable to afford the monetary bond for their release. Money bonds often means that wealth, not innocence, determines whether someone is free or whether they are locked up as their case proceeds.

Make your voice heard in opposition to returning to tough on crime polices.

Support the end of cash bail
Dear State Legislator,

I write to you as a constituent to ask that you oppose any efforts to roll back the end of money bond. I support ending the use of a cash bond system in Illinois, and other real reforms of our criminal legal system. Please reject efforts to roll back components of the SAFE-T Act passed last year, including the Pretrial Fairness Act, that will return us to failed tough on crime policies.

Throughout Illinois, many people are held in jail awaiting trial simply because they are unable to afford the monetary bond for their release. Money bonds often means that wealth, not innocence, determines whether someone is free or whether they are locked up as their case proceeds. This results in our current system treating people without the money for bond as if they are “guilty until proven innocent,” and those with resources as “innocent until proven guilty.”

We must reject failed “tough on crime” approaches, and instead focus on being “smart on crime”.

We want more accountability and equity in our criminal legal and policing systems. Now is not the time to turn back to the failed policies that lead to discriminatory policing and mass incarceration. The SAFE-T Act and the Pretrial Fairness Act was a down payment on this work. We should protect it now.

Sincerely,
