Oppose Efforts to Punish the Unhoused in Normal

The Normal Town Council adopted an ordinance that targets those who are unhoused if they are in public spaces, especially Uptown Station – the transportation center in Uptown Normal. The ordinance punishes those who are homeless when they ask for help or bring their belongings into Uptown Station. Call on Normal leaders to hit pause on this punitive measure and look for real solutions to ensure that Uptown Normal is safe and welcoming for all people.

As a resident of Normal committed to building a strong, safe community for everyone, I write to urge you to reconsider the recently adopted ordinance that threatens punitive measures against those who are unhoused if they gather in the Uptown Station. As a community, we must work to find solutions, not scapegoats, for the problems that face our neighborhoods – including in Uptown Normal.

As adopted, the ordinance specifically places a restriction on people at the Uptown Station asking for help (panhandling) if they are in need. And the measure creates the authority to seize people’s belongings if they are unhoused at Uptown Station and bar them from Uptown Station.

I encourage you to pause any enforcement of this punitive measure while the community comes together that looks for solutions that help, not punish. The process that drove approval of the current ordinance moved too quickly and did not allow for that community-informed process. We can do better for all our neighbors.

Normal long has prided itself on working together to find solutions – a spirit that draws many of us to this community. This is a moment to prove that truth and work together.
