I am writing to urge you to support a bill to provide comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education in public schools across the state.

The curriculum often does little to educate students on healthy decision-making and LGBTQ students are largely stigmatized or ignored entirely. Even basic information on anatomy can be inaccurate, and curriculum materials often reinforce negative gender stereotypes that harm young people.

Gaps in sex education leave New York’s students ill equipped to keep themselves safe and healthy. Lack of education allows stereotypes, misinformation, and toxic relationships to spread.

Legislation introduced in Albany, A.7496 (Gonzalez-Rojas) / S.6901 (Salazar) requires public schools to teach medically accurate and inclusive K-12 comprehensive sex education that is age-appropriate and reflects national standards and best practices.

This legislation will help combat bullying and discrimination as well as sexual harassment and violence. It will also help reduce poor health outcomes and promote healthy relationships. It deserves your support.
