Act Now: Protect your privacy from invasive police drones!

Act Now

Act Now: Protect basic privacy rights of all Oregonians!

Act Now: Stop Oregon from becoming a surveillance state!

We asked you to help us show lawmakers that our Oregonians reject warrantless drone surveillance: You took action, and it worked! As the bill was approaching a fatal deadline, bill proponents moved the bill to another committee to buy themselves more time. Let’s stay loud and tell the new committee, the Oregon State House Rules Committee, that our communities value privacy, free speech, and the right to organize without fear of government intrusion and spying.

Senate Bill 238A, law enforcement’s request for expanded drone authority, would undermine these fundamental rights by drastically expanding the ability of police and sheriffs to surveil our communities with drones — without court oversight.

We know that Trump and his cronies are weaponizing laws and language related to terrorism, policing, and war to silence dissent and destroy American democracy. We also know they want to avoid court oversight at every turn. Many state lawmakers are doing everything they can to protect our rights in Oregon, but bills like SB 238A would play right into Trump’s authoritarian playbook. Thanks to your efforts, Legislators in the key House Judiciary Committee rejected this dangerous bill!

Tell your Representatives: No on SB 238A!

SB 238A is a blank check for law enforcement agencies to begin deploying drones as first responders. SB 238 A sets the stage for unlimited police drones, without a court warrant, in a wide variety of situations. That means law enforcement could use drones to monitor protests, gatherings, or everyday life in our communities with no judicial accountability. If drone data is shared with federal authorities, it could be used by the Trump administration to identify and track the people he is increasingly targeting and harassing, including immigrants and refugees, people seeking reproductive or gender-affirming healthcare, and people speaking out against the fascism of Trump, Vance, and their billionaire cronies.

Oregon’s lawmakers should be ensuring our state is leading the way toward a more just democracy that protects our civil liberties, not taking away our rights and freedoms. The House Rules Committee is the final Committee that can take action on SB 238A before it goes to a full floor vote. Make sure the lawmakers hear your voice today!

We are also monitoring two additional drone-related bills, SB 1125 and HB 3426A, which have both been referred to the Rules Committee. While the focus remains on defeating SB 238A, these bills could also be advanced using similar tactics, and may pose similar threats to our rights. Stay tuned — we may need your help to oppose these bills as well.

Dear House Rules Committee and Speaker Fahey,

As an Oregonian, I believe in the basic rights of privacy, freedom of speech, and protest — which are under attack across the country. The right to speak out and organize or go about our daily lives without fear of surveillance is fundamental to a healthy democracy. Oregon should be leading the way in protecting our civil liberties, not creating new laws that expand unchecked police surveillance of everyday people. Police surveillance is chilling and undermines our fundamental constitutional freedoms.

SB 238A would greatly expand the use of drones by law enforcement in Oregon. This bill removes critical court oversight of police and sheriffs in Oregon when they are using powerful and invasive technology. In our democracy, the courts are supposed to be a check on unfettered authority and potential abuses of power by law enforcement. That is why Oregonians support the Fourth Amendment and the Oregon Constitution, which require police and sheriffs to go to court to get a warrant.

Regardless of their political party or background, Oregonians don’t want their community surveilled! Vote NO on SB 238!

Sincerely,
