Urge Governor Murphy: Sign the Pandemic Credit Bill into Law

New Jersey is about to make history. The New Jersey Legislature passed the Public Health Emergency Credit Bill – a groundbreaking COVID-19 decarceration bill that will speed up the releases of more than 2,500 people who are nearing the end of their sentences anyway.

Lawmakers have recognized the urgency of this unprecedented moment, and used their power to potentially save thousands of lives and expedite releases from a prison system with the worst COVID-19 prison death rate and Black-white prison disparity in the county.

Now it’s Governor Murphy’s turn. Urge the Governor to act now and quickly sign this bill into law. Lives are at stake.

While progress has been made in flattening the curve of COVID-19 infections in New Jersey, those inside New Jersey’s prisons continue to be at significant risk of infection. Despite spiking rates across the country, those who are incarcerated in New Jersey are dying at a rate higher than any state in the nation. State lawmakers have taken historic steps to save lives in New Jersey prisons by passing S2519/A4235. Now, I’m urging you to swiftly sign this groundbreaking bill into law.

Please support the release of incarcerated individuals. Doing so is a matter of life and death.
