Lawmakers narrowly passed a bill that would require most libraries in the state to keep material some have deemed "sexually explicit" in areas that are difficult for minors to access.
Moving books to a less accessible section for their intended readers is censorship – and it runs counter to the American tradition of encouraging the free flow of information and ideas. That alone should give us pause.
But if Governor Kelly Armstrong signs Senate Bill 2307 into law, it's going to cost us. North Dakota taxpayers will be on the hook for nearly $2 million over the next few years to comply with the bill!
The cost, however, goes beyond dollars and cents. Passing Senate Bill 2307 and censoring books will also lead to broader economic and social consequences. We'll be substituting state control for parental judgment. We'll have a less informed and educated public. And we'll be putting our librarians at risk of criminal prosecution for doing their jobs.
Additionally, the bill proposes that local state's attorneys would investigate and prosecute violations, but it is not clear who would be prosecuted. We deserve some clarity.
This is unacceptable. Ask Governor Kelly Armstrong to veto Senate Bill 2307 today.
