Subject Maintain the Separation of Church and State! Oppose Senate Bill 114

I urge you, as my elected official, to vote no on Senate Bill 114. One of the bedrock principles of American Democracy is the separation of church and state. There’s a reason why that principle is codified in the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which provides that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. When our country was founded, religious persecution under state-sponsored churches was rampant, and our Founding Fathers wanted to ensure that such persecution would not find foothold in our country. Here in Montana, the same principle is found in Article II, Section 5 of our Constitution.

SB 114 blatantly violates the principle of separation of church and state by effectively imposing a Christian religious doctrine on public school children nearly every hour of the school day throughout their entire public school education.

As soon as this law is passed, it will be challenged in the Courts and likely struck down, wasting taxpayer dollars as the State is forced to mount a futile defense.
