HF 3725/SF 3419 would replace our current system of civil asset forfeiture with criminal forfeiture, which means the state could only take possession of someone's private property if they have been convicted of a crime. The bill would also direct proceeds from forfeiture to the general state fund rather than directly in the pocket of the police. Right now, current law allows law enforcement to seize your property without ever being charged or convicted of a crime. This bill would make it so they cannot seize your property until after you have been found guilty of a crime.
