Tell Bangor City Council: Protect our Resources, Public Safety, and Constitutional Rights

The message:

The Bangor City Council will soon consider an ordinance to limit local participation in federal immigration enforcement, safeguard constitutional rights, and ensure that local resources are saved for local priorities. The first public hearing is on Monday, February 9, and the council needs to hear from you.

What will this ordinance do?

This ordinance will clarify the role of all city employees by restricting local resources from supporting certain federal immigration operations. The ordinance does not prohibit cooperation with federal immigration officials if public safety is threatened, but ensures that city resources are not used to fuel the administration's indiscriminate deportation machine. The ordinance will also ensure accountability by creating a publicly accessible reporting mechanism if it is violated. Last, this ordinance will also cover all city employees – not just law enforcement – creating stronger protections than the state law that will take effect later this year.

Why include all public officials?

Public officials in roles outside of law enforcement have access to residents' private and sensitive data, which the federal government may try to access. For example, we have seen the Department of Justice (DOJ) target the Maine Secretary of State for voter data.

In Maine towns and cities, this data is held by town and city clerks. Limiting data-sharing by all local employees will better protect communities than protections that focus only on law enforcement
