Override Hogan's Veto - Maryland Immigrants Need "Dignity Not Detention"

Act Now

Immigration detention centers are part of a system of oppression. Collaborations between ICE and local police have encouraged racial profiling and the unjust detention of too many Black, Indigenous, and Immigrants of Color. No one should be profiled for their race or detained for their immigration status.

Whether racists want to believe it or not, immigrants have constitutional rights in Maryland. Our legislators need to ensure those rights are protected. We can curb racial profiling and build community trust by ending immigration detention in Maryland, including prohibiting local jail contracts to detain immigrants for ICE. Maryland immigrants' dignity depends on this.

Tell your legislators to continue supporting immigrants in our community and vote to override the Governor’s veto on the Dignity Not Detention Act (HB 16).

Please take action now.

Dear Maryland Delegates and Senators,

As a resident of Maryland and your constituent, I’d like to thank the General Assembly for supporting and passing the Dignity Not Detention Act (HB 16). Regrettably, Governor Hogan vetoed this important bill. Please advocate for the dignity of Maryland immigrants and override this veto.

I am concerned about the safety of immigrants in Maryland. Immigrants face dangerous racial profiling at the hands of police and ICE and are unjustly detained in Maryland. This is a system of oppression for Black, Indigenous, and Immigrants of Color. No one should be profiled for their race, or detained for their immigration status. HB 16 honors and protects the rights and dignity of immigrants in Maryland.

Everyone has constitutional rights in Maryland and that includes immigrants. Immigrants are welcome here and their dignity as human beings should be a priority to everyone.

I ask you to advocate for the dignity and wellbeing of Maryland immigrants and override Governor Hogan’s veto of the Dignity Not Detention Act (HB 16).

Sincerely,
