Charles County Must Stop the Eviction of the Cedarville Band of the Piscataway Indians

Act Now

Indigenous people have been dispossessed of their land for centuries. Here in Maryland, the Charles County Board of Commissioners is planning to continue this legacy by evicting the Cedarville Band of Piscataway Indians from their land. This is land that they’ve tended to and looked after for 40 years, and is their ancestral winter hunting grounds. Join us to call on the Charles County Commissioners to stop the eviction and give the land back.

Once Europeans landed in Maryland in the 17th century, they physically displaced, killed, culturally disrupted, and denied sovereignty to "the People where the rivers bend," who called themselves the Piscataway.

It is not right that in 2023, our government is still trying to displace Indigenous peoples. Tell the Charles County Commissioners to do the right thing and stop the eviction now.

Dear County Commissioner,

It is a travesty that after all of these centuries, our government is still displacing Indigenous peoples. I object to Charles County attempting to evict the Cedarville Band of Piscataway Indians from land they have ancestral ties to and have formally occupied for 40 years.

Not only have they tended the land and reestablished their historic ties to it, but they’ve built a Piscataway Indian Museum and Cultural Center that includes a collection of cultural, sacred artifacts.

First, do right by the Cedarville Band of the Piscataway Indians. Do not proceed with the eviction of their land on April 9. The land includes their cultural center, sacred artifacts, and religious and ceremonial items.

Next, give the land back to the people who have tended to the land for decades and is also their ancestral winter hunting grounds.

Let’s do better, stop the eviction, and return the stolen land back to the Cedarville Band of Piscataway Indians.

Sincerely,
