Every day, the average person produces an enormous amount of data that reveals extremely intimate details about their lives. This data can be used by bad actors and unscrupulous tech companies to do a great deal of harm. Despite all this, Massachusetts has no data privacy law to protect us from this harm. That has to change.

Right now, state lawmakers are considering several provisions that could form a comprehensive data privacy bill. We need to make sure that this bill is as strong as possible when it comes up for a vote. That’s why we need your help.

Right now, Massachusetts has no data privacy law on the books, and that’s dangerous – for domestic abuse survivors, people seeking health care, protesters exercising their First Amendment rights, religious minorities, workers organizing for their futures, children, and ALL residents of the Commonwealth.

Please pass strong legislation such as H.78 (Representative Farley-Bouvier), H.104 (Representatives Vargas & Rogers), and S.2516 (Reported favorably by the Advanced IT Committee and referred to Senate Ways & Means).

Please support H.78, H.104, and S.2516 to ensure that Massachusetts finally puts strong data privacy protections in place.

You and I live an enormous part of our lives online. With every pic, click, search, purchase, and step we take with a smartphone in our pocket, companies are collecting and manipulating our personal information: Every app we use, every site we visit, every map we follow, every appointment we add to our calendar adds to our digital dossier, accessible by anyone with a credit card.

All this information makes us vulnerable, not just to predatory corporate interests but also to harm from individual extremists and targeting by a federal government that is not shy about going after people for speaking their minds.

Please pass a strong data privacy law to protect our families and communities from exploitation and harm.

At a minimum, digital privacy law should include 3 key elements:

1. Data Minimization. Companies should not collect or use more information about us than they need to provide the service we asked for.

2. No Selling Sensitive Data. There’s no reason companies should be allowed to profit from selling such intimate information about us as our location, which shows everywhere we go, our health or genetics, our religious affiliation, or even data enabling people to track our children.

3. Private Right of Action. When a law is violated, it should be enforceable in court. Companies only follow the law when they know there’s real accountability. Otherwise, it’s just a suggestion.

Please support H.78, H.104, and S.2516 to ensure that Massachusetts finally puts strong data privacy protections in place.
